A Love from Garden Gnome, or Why I Hate the Baby Boomers
Writer's Note: When I say Baby Boomers, you know who you are are: Middle class and rich white liberals and conservatives. The ones we ALWAYS hear about. If you are a baby boomer who is a member of some oppressed group, I ain't talkin' about you.
Dear Baby Boomers,
Just when you thought hating on you was only a pastime for Generation X, it turns out those of us in "Generation Y" aren't impressed with you either. As I am sitting here finishing the last papers of my college career, I reflect on what I have to look forward to in my adult life on account of your megalomania.
You had absolutely everything. Your parents grew up in the Great Depression, selling apples on the street and being sent to live with relatives because their parents couldn't afford to feed them. They grew up in families with record amounts of domestic violence, suicide, and divorce due to economic crisis they were enduring. Just when they became young adults, and were thinking, "shit, how am I going to survive, and support a family?", the US entered World War II, and the men went off to kill Nazis while the women stayed on the Home Front and became the first generation of women from all economic classes who worked outside the home. (Women of color and and poor women have always worked) When the war ended, your parents created the greatest and most widely enjoyed prosperity this country has ever seen. Of course, there were a lot of problems. Segregation and other forms of racism being a notable example.
This is where you think you come in. You love love love to wax poetic about how you were the vanguards of all the liberation movements that ever came to fruition in the 20th century, particularly the black civil rights movement. Except that the civil rights movement that we all know and love started in the 1950's, when you were still kidlings. Furthermore, white baby boomers were a minority in the civil rights movement. Basically all the liberation movements were spearheaded by the people who were actually being oppressed. The only movement that REALLY got you riled up was the anti-war movement, when you realized that the draft meant that being blown apart by shrapnel was not JUST for working class guys and men of color anymore. You dabbled in all these movements, railed against the soulessness of your parents' America, but at the end of it, you left all of your former comrades to become the Me generation.
So you left the black people, gays and lesbians, Chicanos, and American Indians to fend for themselves in the 1970's while you descended into hedonistic decadence. Then came the 1980's. You proclaimed that greed is good and bought McMansions in the suburbs that would have made your parents in Levittown blush. You voted for Reagan, who, among other evil deeds, did nothing while the worst plague in human history decimated gay men, and other marginalized groups you are supposedly "cool with".
And while you were off being a yuppie, you neglected to pay off your very cheap and highly subssidized student loans. Because of this, Generation X and Y have had to sign on to expensive and draconian loans costing us tens of thousands of dollars in interest in order to go to college, all at a time when college tuition was skyrocketing.
You created lifestylism. And in the 1990's Clinton Era, it only got better! You bought bigger houses, told single mothers to go fuck themselves with welfare reform, and my personal favorite, bought and drove SUV's, because you know, you needed the cargo room for your chocolate lab and hermes luggage.
Nowadays, you complain about "kids today". They don't care about anything. Not like you did when you were their age. I'm sorry, going to a total of five protests between acid drops and all night birth control enabled fuck fests does not an activist make. It never crosses your mind that "kids today" are in fact YOUR kids. You raised them. You were the ones who made them helpless by attending to their every need, getting rid of recess because they might "hurt" themselves, and creating a market for anti-bacterial hand sanitizer.
Furthermore, many of us are actually pretty rad. We are putting ourselves through school, and getting involved in many issues, ranging from climate change, the Iraq war, and globalization. Not that you've noticed. You lament that we don't "care". Look, I know you've now traded in your SUV for a Prius, and smugly look down on those of us who are still so selfish that we won't drive a hybrid, but let me put it to you straight. I CAN'T AFFORD A FUCKING HYBRID. IF YOUR GENERATION WASN'T SO BUSY TRYING TO MAKE A FUCKING FAT PROFIT OFF OF EVERY GREEN TECHNOLOGY THAT HITS THE MARKET, I COULD PROBABLY AFFORD TO BUY ONE.
You allowed the government to raid social security for years and years and years, and are only concerned now that your checks are coming due. If you hadn't abandoned the many movements for social change in the 1960's, we might actually have a security net in this country. You were the first generation to throw you parents into nursing homes en masse because you needed to "live your own life", and engaged in rampant ageism in 1980's (my grandfather being one of your casualties), but now that you're gettin' old, long term life and care issues are suddenly important again.
So thanks, Baby Boomers! I will NEVER have the prosperity you've enjoyed and that your parents (who you've since allowed to be euthanized in a stinking substandard nursing home) laid the foundation for. If I ever own a home, it probably won't be until I'm in my forties; I'm so shackled with debt. And my grandparents (whom you have to thank for your prosperity) and my mother (one of those single mothers your "invisible hand" decided to fingerbang into submission) will have two feet in the grave before they have any great-grand or grandchilden, because I won't be able to afford to raise children until I'm 50.
Also, even though YOU popularized sex outside of marriage and liberalized sexual mores, you won't let me get married, cuz I'm a dude who likes other dudes. Your favorite and first Baby Boomer president, Bill Clinton, closed that door for me with DOMA. He sure wanted my community's votes, and campaign contributions though. Then the second baby boomer president, George W. Bush, thought it'd be a great idea to take Billy's idea a step further. But then, just in time, you decided that it was just a ruse to get our minds off the war. Phew.
You're not all bad, though. Some of you never left your ideals behind, and are not showering in organic champagne in your Kohler totally sustainable but nevertheless $50,000 showpiece bathroom. Some of you have devoted your lives working with special needs kids. Some of you raised three kids and then went back to school to become a third grade teacher. Some of you are college professors who put up with and even encourage students like me. And some of you are like that woman that the editors of this fine site wrote about:
Moving through the square, we next encountered a middle-aged woman holding a large Barak Obama sign. She was drawn to Obama for his youthful energy and ability to unite people. She said that one reason she did not support Clinton was generational. She felt that her and Clinton's generation had failed; that they "HAD EVERYTHING AND THREW IT ALL AWAY." Finally, a boomer with some self-awareness.
Sincerely,
Garden "two generations and still in the shadow of the boom" Gnome

(In All Honesty) I Loved This Essay But...
09 May 2008
I think there are quite a few examples of baby boomers who tried to change the world for the better and have. One that comes to mind is Ron Kovic, who wrote "Born on the Fourth of July". He's still confined to a wheelchair, he still pisses and shits in a bag every day for a war based on lies, and yet when Iraq went down he was still on the frontlines of anti-war movement---wheelchair, shit bag, and all. I'd prefer not to denigrate that.
Then there's Amy Goodman (born 1957) of DemocracyNow!, still giving a voice to the voiceless, and still broadcasting the important stories that would never reach the public otherwise. She nearly had her skull caved in trying to cover the massacre at East Timor. I'd prefer not to shit on that, either.
Is everyone born between 1946 and 1964 fair game? Should I hate Cornell West, too (born 1953)? How about Eve Ensler (born 1953)? How about Food Not Bombs founder Keith McHenry (born 1957)? How about muckraking journalist Eric Schlosser (born 1959)? Perhaps these people have not contributed as much to society as yourself, but please. They didn't have the good fortune to have been born during the correct years.
If you'll recall....

Secondly, women are also an oppressed group. The biggest of them all, in fact. While you may admire Eve Ensler and Amy Goodman, as a pro-feminist man who has had the opportunity to befriend and listen to many women feminists, I believe they have a lot of explaining to do to other women. Amy Goodman, for all her good work, (and I mean that sincerely, nor do I denigrate her near-miss skull bashing) doesn't seem to have a problem with the sex industry. She interviwed Larry Flynt, of all people, back in 2004. Larry Flynt would definitely be elected as president of the misogyny club. He is, by the way, a baby boomer. Furthermore, despite all its criticism of globalization, DemocracyNow! doesn't seem to give a flying fucking shit about one of the largest industries to arise as a result of globalization: the international sex industry. I would encourage you to visit hustlingtheleft.com to gain more insight on this.
As for Eve Ensler, I admire her in the same way I admire Jackson Pollack. She did something no one has ever done before, but that being said, a 2 year old could have done it. She is not a good writer, for starters. She has some monologues that are well-written, but most of her stuff is stream-of-conciousness crap. Furthermore, her 3rd wave brand of feminism has done nothing to advance women. I'm glad that there are women out there who have come to love their vaginas as a result of her work, but the very fact that most of the Vagina Monologues cast women as Woman=Vagina is a serious problem. Also, I would love to a see transgressive play about women that doesn't spend most of its time discussing and glorifying women and their status as fuck objects. Finally, how rich do you think Eve Ensler has gotten off of the Vagina Monologues?
But you know what, I can't blame Eve and Amy too much. Unfortunately, many women have internalized their oppression to a greater or lesser degree, and fall victim to defending men's interests in exchange for pseudo-privileges. (The ability to have award-winning plays and radio shows, for example.)
And finally, I ended my screed on a positive note. I said, and I quote, "You're not all bad, though. Some of you never left your ideals behind." I think Keith McHenry and Eric Schlosser (I loved Fast Food Nation, by the way) would probably fall into that category. Ron Kovic definitely falls into that category.
I think I made it pretty clear I was not talking about most of the people you mentioned.
But in general, baby boomers fucked it up pretty badly for us younger people.
And finally, if you have to base your arguments on exceptions to the rule, (I know it's hard not to, as this a favorite pastime of postmoderism, also brought to us by the baby boomers)your argument is probably weak.
In conclusion, thank you for reading, and thank you for your comments, I truly do appreciate it.

Wrong--in the 1970's, BEFORE the republican legislation came in to penalize and privatize student loans, the bankruptcy rate was less than 1%. There are no 'loan delinquents' to blame for the current situation, but since you apparently want to turn on your fellow borrowers instead of targeting the right wing legislation, clearly you will change nothing.
Otherwise, the parents of the baby boomers were disgusting right wingers who abused their children so much that they could only go on to create a world like the one we have now. How pathetic that you claim to rail against your parents but spare your grandparents, who made them what they are through physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect. Boys, in fact, were always victims of this abuse to a much greater extent, something which you completely ignore in this bizzare combination of prejudices.
You even buy the LIE that social security is in danger and needs to be privatized! Idiot! Obama is Clinton.

As far as the parents of baby boomers all being right-wingers, if that is so, than why did some of the greatest examples of welfare capitalism and entitlement programs have their birth under their watch?
Furthermore, your assertion about the parents of the baby boomers having "made them what they are through physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect," is a bizarre combination of prejudices, as it were. There is no evidence to suggest that abuse of any kind was more prevalent in previous eras than it is today. The only difference between now and then is that we now talk about abuse in public and make meager efforts as a society to combat it. Some people even think that there is more abuse today than there was in previous times. This of course, is also untrue.
Your claim that "Boys, in fact, were always victims of this abuse to a much greater extent", makes me think that you are some kind of weird leftist/men's rights activist hybrid. I hate child abuse as much as the next person, but I also hate "DEAR GOD< WHAT ABOUT THE MEN??!!??!" arguments with equal passion.

MOST BABY BOOMERS SOLD OUT, plain and simple. We wouldn't be in a lot of the messes we are in today if so many of you BB's hadn't given up the revolution in order to become hedonistic coke-using yuppies.

As far as radical queers go, if you can find a pulse on that movement, then you can claim it. But I am pretty sure that Stonewall to Act-Up was our legacy.

As for the climate change movement, if you call driving a Prius and buying $7 Seventh Generation toilet paper being part of a "movement", then yes, the climate change movement is chock full of baby boomers. Of course these things are just an extension of lifestylism, which baby boomers created.
Baby boomers as an entire generation cannot possibly claim the early gay rights movement as "their" legacy. That is the problem with you baby boomers. You take credit for movements that only a minority of you were involved in, and act like the whole lot of you were being hosed down by cops.

Gen X here. Thanks for the show. No, I have no desire to help either generation. Not the boomers, who dumped the bills for their utopian society onto Ys. Nore the Ys in their objections. I am just enjoying watching the chaos. Which is what I like doing. Whine whine whine. I love every word. Keep up the good (shoddy) work.
Entertain us. Don't ever learn from us. That would ruin the show.

I remember reading about surveys that show millennials are pre-disposed to accepting more government control. Time will tell, I guess.
