We Will NOT Be Silenced!

A columnist for The New Hampshire (the official University of New Hampshire student newspaper) received a pornographic death threat Monday, September 27 in reaction her feminist. In her column she has repeatedly condemned the fraternal system at UNH and called for accountability from the university administration.

The columnist is a member of the Feminist Action League (FAL) a radical feminist group made up of both students and non-students. FAL has been calling for the abolition of the fraternities at UNH, and more immediately for the reinstation of the Violence Against Women and Social Change class that has recently been cut do to budget constraints placed on the Women's Studies Department.

FAL is working to take the financial burden of providing the Violence Against Women and Social Change class off the shoulders of Women's Studies and place the responsibility on the university as a whole.

In response to the death threat, the Feminist Action League and Men Against Patriarchy are holding a speak out Tuesday October 5th at 12:40 in front of Thompson Hall on the UNH campus.

Members of the community are invited to come and demonstrate that threats of violence will not silence feminism.

Re: Feminism Will Not Die

Perhaps the threat of violence was not intended to silence you..

what exactly is a 'speak out'? and does it really serve a purpose other than to engage in a childish pissing contest with the fraternities and patriarchal men on campus?

perhaps what i'm deriding as a pissing contest is something more...feel free to enlighten me

Re: Feminism Will Not Die

that came off as a little belligerent...

i'm just sort of having trouble with the whole FAL deal, because it largely seems to be a war or propoganda/public relations...a war that you're not going to win - considering how dominant (both in coverage and in how much of each individual's life it makes up) the patiarchal culture is.

if you want to accomplish something - just go do it. i don't see how pointing out to the unh community (the community that is victimizing you) that you are victimized by it is going to help anything. those in power will only do what is in the best long-term interest of their own power. you're not going to change any of that by begging in a more militant tone! since that is what you're doing:

"We are not going to put up with this anymore!"
...then you do nothing...maybe put on a skit...

i mean, cmon, i understand wanting to act and all, but don't let it become some sort of surrogate activity where you feel like you're liberated because you're announcing that you should be liberated, and finally acting as if you deserve it - that is one type of liberation, and more power to you for it...but regardless of what postmodern american culture tells you, image is not everything.

k proffessor anon is done lecturing now, heh..

Quote-of-the-Moment

I say we take the oil. I don't think people realize the super-crisis mode the North Country is in. When you talk about the cost of fuel oil and how it hits a family, our average family income is half what it is down in southern New Hampshire.
-- Republican Sen. John Gallus on 'controversy' of accepting oil assistance for low income people from Citgo and the socialist government of Venezuela.
